Founder, Nevilla E. Ottley receives Award

On Saturday, March 1, 2014 Nevilla Ottley was added to the District of Columbia Public Schools Piano Competition list of Honorees.  Some of the others in that list of distinguished piano teachers over their last 35 years include Earl "Fatha" Hines, "Duke" Ellington, Monte Alexander, Billy Taylor, Shirley Horn, Roberta Flack, Raymond Jackson, Hildred Roach, Marian McPartland, Marva Cooper, and Oscar Peterson.

Those giving tributes were alumnus Victoria Alma Castello, professor at Duke Ellington School of the Arts, who read the tribute, and played Black composer Noah Ryder's "Rhapsody", alumnus Claudia "Kool Keys" Rogers who performed her arrangement of Richard Smallwood's "Total Praise", and OMS piano teacher, Naoko Maeda, concert pianist and composer who presented the Chopin Ballade No. 3 in E-flat.

Ms. Ottley is grateful to Victoria Alma Castello, Janet Peachey and Haewon Min, for choosing her as the 2014 honoree, and thanks pianists Castello, Kool Keys and Maeda for their tributes in absolutely wonderful performances.
